A first-class history of the Axial Age (900 – 200 BCE).

The Origins of Political Order  Francis Fukuyama – Farrar, Straus, and Giroux – 2011

An excellent accounting of political order from “The State of Nature” to the present.

After Virtue  Alasdair MacIntyre  – University of Notre Dame Press – 2007

An historical and philosophical account of virtue by a remarkable and brilliant moral philosopher.  An absolute pleasure to read.

The Idea of Justice  Amartya Sen – The Belknap Press – 2009

Although dedicated to John Rawls and his theory of justice, a densely developed argument against some of Rawls’ ideas.

In the Valley of the Shadow of Death  James L. Kugel – Free Press – 2011

A beautifully written and brilliant discourse on belief written from a personal point of view as well as from a professional biblical scholar’s.

Distorting The Law William Haltom and Michael McCann – The University of Chicago Press – 2004

How the courts have been subverted against the people. Well written and well documented and includes the TRUE story of the woman who spilled hot coffee on herself at McDonalds in Albuquerque, NM.

Tangled Webs  James B. Stewart – The Penguin Press – 2011

The sub-title of this book is: How False Statements Are Undermining America. This book documents in fascinating detail the crimes and trials of four famous Americans: Martha Stewart, Bernie Madoff, Barry Bonds and Scooter Libby.
